The dead are buried or cremated in Hindu tradition?

Generally Hindus cremate the dead but in some customs people are buried. In Rig Veda there is mention about burials, but towards the end of the Vedic era the dead were mostly cremated. Infants and very holy people are buried and tombs are erected for holy saints. These saints are buried using holy ashes, vilva leaves, camphor, sandalwood powder, holy waters rock salt, tulsi leaves etc. a Shiva Linga is then set up above the tomb and pujas offered regularly at the Samadhi.

Does Hinduism prohibit mutilation of the dead body or does it prevent body organ or eye donation after death?

There is no mention of this in Hindu scriptures. The moment the soul leaves the body the human body is dead and pronounced useless. If it can be of some help to other living souls then it is the best way to create good karma for the departed as he donates his own body for charitable purposes to help someone lead a much better and happy life. The family members also are satisfied that their beloved ones eyes are seeing this world and their kidneys or body organs are still alive. The best charity for any human is to be of some help when he is alive. This value becomes more powerful when on death this human is being helpful in making a difference in so many peoples lives.

What is the real meaning behind the Hindu cremation ceremony?

The five elements in nature namely Akash (ether), Vayu (air), Tejas (fire), Ap (Water), and Prithivi (earth) and these five elements are called Pancha Maha Bhuttas. The human body is said to be made of these five elements and the soul resides in this human body until its death. The bond between the soul and the body is so strong that it becomes a very painful affair for the soul to transit from this material bond. Hindu rituals based on this helps the soul from this painful transition and provides a smoother and less painful transition into the other world. The Vedic mantras serve this purpose not only to the dead but the grieved family members too are consoled psychologically. The mantras are so powerful that the negativity in the atmosphere following the death is totally removed and peace sets in creating a positive ambience for the family to continue with their normal lives.
